Two main research ideas critical to Eastern tradition in Japan: tectonics and tranquility. The nation of Japan has a layered history but has proven a technologically forward country throughout its processes of construction. From the awe-inspiring temples constructed without the use of nails to the towering skyscrapers with swinging mass dampers that punctuate the urban skyline, each structure embodies a symphony of form and function. In response to natural catastrophes, conflict, and the unique context of the island, Japan’s architectural tectonics have developed with a fascinating lens of resilience in densely urban areas. But even with as many dense urban landscapes as Japan has, it’s still quite easy to find a place for peace and reflection. These gardens of retreat underscore Japan’s profound understanding of the relationship between man and nature. As the world population continues to grow and natural ecosystems collide with built ecosystems, it’s critical that we continue to design places for reflection and connect users with nature
