Challenge: Create a multistory office building along the High Line in Chelsea, New York. Life in an urban environment like New York City comes with different challenges and opportunities. The way work looks has transformed with technology and it is constantly shifting. Following the pandemic there are more people working from home. With this came feelings of isolation and anxiety. More than what work is, we wanted to explore how we work, how it makes us feel, and how we can approach the question of how work will look in the future.

When diving into the characteristics of the site, we were able to get a good sense of what the community around the high line needed, what their vision is, and hopefully where they will be in the future. With the pandemic came problems with exporting goods and job insecurity. Households and children were having difficulty getting dependable meals. Also with population growth hitting eight billion, there is a massive need to find reliable food sources that can produce enough for the population.
For our design, we decided to make a hybrid work space with a traditional office space and an urban agriculture unit. Our two acres of vertical agriculture can produce enough goods to feed the surrounding community. If we were able to replicate this initiative throughout New York, we could feed the United States most densely populated city. By producing a building that can give back, we are raising the standard of design.
